The hill is named for the Roman god Janus. Janus is the god of beginnings and endings and is often shown with two faces. The hill was supposedly the centre for worshippers of Janus. The name itself is that of a mythological town founded by god which appears in Virgil’s Aeneid.
Today, the hill is home to several monuments and at midday a cannon is fired towards the Tiber river to mark the time. This tradition dates back to the 1800s.
Anyone who braves the climb up the hill, or attempts the journey in style on a Vespa, has earned the stunning views of Rome and the Vatican City. The view is especially breath-taking in the evening when the shining lights of the city are scattered against the backdrop of the dark sky.
